Citizenship & Science Academy of Rochester Charter School recently participated in standard lead testing as part of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) surveillance program. In accordance with current regulations, schools are now required to conduct lead testing every three years (previously every five years ). This testing is not only a compliance measure—it allows us to identify and proactively address any outlets that may need remediation.
As part of this year’s testing in April 2025, 54 water outlets across the building were evaluated. We are pleased to share that all drinking fountains—those actively used by students—tested well below the newly regulated action level of 5 parts per billion (ppb) and are safe for consumption. Through this testing, we identified water outlets - primarily hand washing sinks - located in the restrooms and hand washing stations, which exceeded the newly regulated 5 parts per billion (ppb) lead limit (previously 15 ppb).
We posted clear signage stating “Not for drinking—use for handwashing only” and began preparing a mitigation plan to replace the associated plumbing. We are committed to continued investigation and remediation, including the replacement of any older fixtures and follow-up testing to confirm that all outlets meet safety standards. Our goal is to eliminate any traces of lead and ensure the continued health and safety of all students and staff.
It’s important to note that all student-accessible drinking fountains and bottle-filling stations are safe and remain below the 5 ppb limit.
At Citizenship & Science Academy of Rochester Charter School, ensuring safety and fostering a conducive learning environment are our top priorities for all of our students. Thank you for your continued support as we maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for all.
